When Should You Start Preparing for University Applications?

The honest answer is earlier than most families expect — but it’s never too late to start well. What matters is not the calendar date so much as starting with a clear plan.

The ideal runway: 18–24 months out

Students who begin 18 to 24 months before their deadlines have time to sit the SAT more than once, build a genuine extracurricular story, draft and refine essays without panic, and apply for financial aid properly. That runway is the single biggest predictor of a calm, successful cycle.

Great applications are written over months, not weekends.

A simple timeline

✓ 24–18 months out: profile audit, SAT diagnostic, and a target-school shortlist.
✓ 18–12 months out: SAT preparation and the first sitting; deepen one or two activities.
✓ 12–6 months out: finalise the school list, draft essays, and map every deadline.
✓ 6–0 months out: polish applications, prepare for interviews, and submit early where possible.

Starting late? Start anyway

If your deadlines are closer than that, don’t despair — a focused, well-sequenced plan can still produce excellent results. The students who struggle are not the ones who started late; they are the ones who started without a strategy.

That’s exactly what a consultation is for: an honest look at where you are, and a clear plan for what to do next, whatever your timeline.
