Once your child has accepted a place at a US university, there is one more step before they can travel: the F-1 student visa. The process is straightforward when families prepare early, and stressful when they do not. Here is how it works for students applying from Kenya.
After your child confirms their place and shows the university proof of funding, the university issues Form I-20. This document confirms they have been admitted and lists the estimated cost of study. Check that every detail on it is correct.
Every F-1 applicant must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee online before the visa interview. Keep the payment receipt, because it is needed at the interview.
The DS-160 is the online visa application form. After submitting it and paying the visa application fee, your child books an interview at the US Embassy in Nairobi. Book as early as possible, because appointments can be limited in the busy months before the autumn intake.
Most visa delays come from late appointments and missing documents, not from difficult interviews.
The interview is usually short. The officer wants to understand why your child chose the university and course, how their studies will be funded, and their plans after graduation. Students should answer honestly, clearly and in their own words. Practising common questions in advance helps students feel calm and confident.
If the visa is approved, the passport is returned with the visa inside. Students can usually enter the United States up to 30 days before their programme start date on the I-20. Check the latest guidance from the US Embassy in Nairobi before travelling, as procedures can change.
