UK vs USA vs Canada: Which Is Right for Your Child?

For Kenyan families, the three most common study destinations are the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Each offers excellent universities, but they differ in how long degrees take, how students apply, what it costs and how much funding is available. Here is a clear side-by-side guide.

The United Kingdom

✓ Degrees usually take three years, and students study one subject in depth from day one.
✓ Applications go through UCAS, with one personal statement for up to five universities.
✓ Offers are usually based on predicted and final grades.
✓ Scholarships for international undergraduates are limited compared with the US.

The United States

✓ Degrees usually take four years, with flexibility to explore subjects before choosing a major.
✓ Applications are holistic: grades, activities, essays, recommendations and often the SAT.
✓ Most universities use the Common App, with extra essays for each school.
✓ Top universities offer the most generous need-based aid to international students.

Canada

✓ Degrees usually take four years, often in a specific programme from the start.
✓ Admissions focus mainly on grades in relevant subjects, with some programmes asking for more.
✓ Tuition is often lower than at private US universities.
✓ Graduates may be eligible to work in Canada after graduation, which many families value.

The best destination is not the one with the most famous names. It is the one that fits how your child learns, what they want to study and what your family can sustain.

How to decide

Students who know exactly what they want to study and prefer a shorter degree often suit the UK. Students who want breadth, flexibility and the strongest chance of significant funding often suit the US. Students who want a high-quality degree, lower costs and work opportunities after graduation often suit Canada. Many AFEX Hub students apply to more than one country to keep their options open.
